The Black Explosion is the University of Maryland’s first and only Black student newspaper. Established in 1970, the Black Explosion works to conduct reporting on Black campus life, issues, and students. We hire students from all disciplines and all backgrounds to work on our incredible staff! You do not have to be a journalism student to apply!! We’re looking for individuals with strong digital media, social media, writing, or business skills.

Interested in covering the University of Maryland’s Black and African student diasporas
Show a strong ability to collaborate with staff across the newsroom

Open Positions

Staff Writer - Provide timely and quality news coverage relevant to Black members of the university community
Copy Editor - Ensure the work of our publication is accurate and readable. Copy editors are responsible for fact-checking, reviewing grammar/spelling and ensure writing adheres to this publication's style guidelines.
Photographer - Provide complementary visual storytelling for the work produced by reporters or produce their own pieces as photo essays.
Engagement Editor - Producing content for our social media platforms that engages our audience. This includes but is not limited to adapting reporting from staff writers to be accessible on social media platforms. </aside>
