The Black Explosion is the University of Maryland’s first and only Black student newspaper. Established in 1970, the Black Explosion works to conduct reporting on Black campus life, issues, and students. We hire students from all disciplines and all backgrounds to work on our incredible staff! You do not have to be a journalism student to apply!! We’re looking for individuals with strong digital media, social media, writing, or business skills.

Open Positions

Staff Writer - Provide timely and quality news coverage relevant to Black members of the university community.
Columnist - Provide quality personal essays, critiques, reviews and other non-fictional pieces for our viewpoints section.
Copy Editor - Ensure the work of our publication is accurate and readable. Copy editors are responsible for fact-checking, reviewing grammar/spelling and ensure writing adheres to this publication's style guidelines.
Photographer - Provide complementary visual storytelling for the work produced by reporters or produce their own pieces as photo essays.
Videographer - Provide complementary video storytelling for the work produced by reporters or produce their own pieces of video reporting.
Engagement Editor - Producing content for our social media platforms that engages our audience. This includes but is not limited to adapting reporting from staff writers to be accessible on social media platforms.
General Assignments Editor - Manage freelance reporters.
Viewpoints Editor - Manage writers for the paper’s viewpoint section, covering anything from music reviews to argumentative essays and other writing rooted in the author’s perspective. </aside>
